Healy Computer Desk Chocolate at $74.00 in Computer Desks.

So funny story; I was looking for a new desk (as my current one makes me use the mouse behind the keyboard) so I got out ye ol’ measuring tape.

I have total length of 770mm available (800mm at a stretch)
My current desk is a modular 610mm.
My computer is 500mm high, 520mm deep.

I figured from that that my ideal space would be 750mm+ so that I can fit my mouse next to the keyboard rather than behind, so I set out to find the desk I need.

After searching my usual haunches (oo.com.au, dealsdirect.com.au, topbuy.com.au) I found nothing but stupidity.
Plenty of them were ~800mm long but its ridiculous how they designed these things.
They decided to have the keyboard tray just the size of a keyboard, and a massive top shelf; the pictures they had implied that you should put the mouse on the shelf along with the monitor!
Now I’m sorry, but that’s just plain stupid.

Anyways, I happened across the Officeworks website, figuring they would be expensive and not what I want.
How surprised was I!
I found this one (see top) on the first page and discovered it matched EXACTLY what my needs are:

770mm long, which is exactly what I need, 540mm between keyboard tray and computer platform (my computer is 500mm tall)
And although $74 seems a little much… and I think the build quality probably sucks. Me thinks this is about the best I can do.

I guess I’ll head down there sometime and see if its what I want.

Logitech Performance Mouse M950

Logitechshop has done it to me again, at $55 I just HAD to have this mouse.As with my G510, it came 1 business day later, and was free postage.

My thoughts so far on this mouse (I just got it today) are that its very well made for games, but not so good for casual use.

For example there’s a forward and backward button on the left side right next to each other. Now thats something I can tolerate for the moment (I’m more used to having the buttons on either side of the mouse); However, when you hold the mouse in a ‘relaxed’ grip, like I do when I’m casually browsing. The furthest away button (forward) is beyond the reach of my thumb.

Luckily just below the back button there’s a zoom button, which can be reassigned. So now I have the zoom button reassigned to back and the back button reassigned to forward.

Other issues I’ve noticed so far: the scroll wheel, while really cool, can sometimes go the opposite way a little bit after a scroll; Easily fixed by changing the mouse to the traditional scrolling mode rather than hyper-scroll but still, an issue.

Another problem I’m having (intermittently) is the wireless lag. It seems to have calmed down since I installed the SetPoint software but still every now and then it wont move when its supposed to. Now that said I do have have multiple possible interference sources such as the Keyboard the desk and the case (the unifying adapter is plugged into the back) and probably my phone too. Anyway, if it gets too bad ill just put it into one of the front ports and that should bypass a significant amount of interference. Just another thought, my desk could definitely use a clean so that might also be an issue 🙂

UPDATE: I ended up plugging it in the front port; haven’t had an issue since.

Windows – Linux Networking

So a few weeks ago I installed IPFire on my router primarily to enable me to put in an NTFS drive and share it via SAMBA.

I’ve only now got around to actually measuring how fast it actually transfers; not so good.

But first I did an IPerf test to check my actual throughput, with interesting results:

When the Router was Client I got 476Mbps or 59.5MB/s
Now with my Windows 7 machine as the client I got 268Mbps or 33.5MB/s

There’s something weird going on there.

Anyway on to the SAMBA results:

Source of file: /tmp (ext4 drive)

Router -> Desktop I got 20-21MB/s
Desktop -> Router I got 15-17 MB/s

Source of file:  /mnt/media (ntfs drive)

Router -> Desktop I got 15 MB/s
Desktop -> Router I got 8-9 MB/s

Funny thing about all this: I have no idea what conclusions I can draw from the data provided. It appears that the slowest transfer occurs when I try copying a file from my desktop machine to the media drive on the router. Why? Not a clue. It really doesn’t make much sense to me. Possibly it’s the NTFS driver, maybe the HDD has something wrong, perhaps the mount point isn’t configured right.
One thing I can be sure of is that the problem happens primarily when transferring from my desktop machine, to the router. Guess it’s gonna be trial and error
