Bloggin’ along…

After I finished making up my new website I was told by a friend that it might be a good idea to allow guests to move straight from the blog’s homepage (blog.derrynjones.com) to the base homepage (www.derrynjones.com).

In agreement, we went looking through the theme’s php code in search of the line that makes the link for the header pic and the “home” button. Eventually we (he) found what we needed and changed it to directly link to my home page.

Unfortunately,  I stumbled across a blog that had the theme that I used to have on my old blog (which I lost and had been looking for since). After I installed it I set off to change the php code on this one as well; however, I found that it already had a native option to make your own custom menus. Long story short, I easily made the blog include a link to my homepage and I get what is definitely a superior theme.

Here’s the link for anyone interested:

and I also downloaded the Mystique Extra Nav Icons plugin so that I can add more icons to the top row bar because lets face it, twitter and RSS isn’t enough (especially considering I don’t have a twitter account). I ended up going a little crazy ( as you can see) but I think its not too bad.

Well, that’s it for my second entry for the day. Possibly another will follow (although it is 1am at the time of writing so maybe not).

Later.

So… its been a while

So yeh its been a few days since I’ve posted here, and much has happened since my move to the new domain. I’m thinking I’ll split things up so as to ensure things are more easily found via Google.

I’ve been working on the actual site “DerrynJones.com” and so far so good. This time I actually bothered to plan and design the whole thing in advance (WOW, apparently I actually learnt something in my high-school IT classes!). Though before that I needed to brush up on the latest standards for HTML design. To do that I used one of the templates in Adobe Dreamweaver and used it as well just that, a template. This taught me 2 things: 1) Tables are no longer the layout manager of choice, <div> and <id> are used and 2) External CSS is the way to go for styles.

So I knocked it all up as per my plan and I didn’t like it. So I went back to some of my previous website projects and drew inspiration. Luckily most of the changes were purely cosmetic and only required minor changes to the external CSS style sheet. Overall I’m pretty happy with it now, and because I used colours similar to my blog, they blend quite well.

I actually found it much easier to make a ‘modern’ website than using tables to make a layout changes and embedded html tags to define styles.

So I used <div> tags to define each area of the page and <p class = classname> to apply styles; way easier than applying individual font parameters.

I must say its great that we are seeing more modular design when it comes to anything software related.

Also, I decided to check my site against the W3C validator for XHTML Transitional 1.0 and also CSS 2.1. Surprisingly I passed on both so I added their buttons to the bottom of my page to add a little more ‘professional’ touch =D.

Well I think that’s about it for the second.

The Great Migration

0

This is my first post from my new domain, and thus also a self-hosted WordPress page.

So long story short, I was talking with a friend about the benefits of having my own domain and
I ended up getting both derrynjones.net and derrynjones.com along with hosting (for just derrynjones.com) from VentraIP.com.au. For anyone interested, I spent a total of $56.90 for 2 years hosting and 1 year for both domain registrations; $17.90 for the domains, $39 for the hosting.

Thus far the .net address is just for Google Apps (that’s a story for another day). I have been knocking up a new site for derrynjones.com, which is currently live – though not really complete.

So far I’m quite impressed with VentraIP (VIP) and the price is ridiculously low. It includes 100GB of transfer per month (which is incredible for $39)and 5GB of storage. I get a full cPanel setup with all the mod cons and also installatron; which allows easy installation of popular software packages.

Anyways, if there is an issue I come across, I’ll be sure to rant about it here 😛
